It’s always exciting to go somewhere with a spa bath, the ideal way to wind down after a busy day – and for good reason. Sitting in a spa bath has been proven to reduce stress, improve circulation, ease muscle pain, reduce arthritis pain, and encourage increased blood flow. But hot tubs can be a hot mess and germs and microorganisms. A savvy solution for beating the bacteria is through ozone treatment.
Why are spa baths such a hot tub of infection?
- Warm water opens the pores of the body, allowing the dirt, oil, and microscopic particles lurking within to come out. These can, you guessed it, pass into the open pores of other bathers, leading to superficial skin infections.
- Spa baths serve as frequent transfer stations for bacteria. In fact, there’s a common bacterial infection that has even been dubbed “hot tub rash.”
- The steam from the spa bath creates an additional mode by which bacteria spreads.
- It’s harder to maintain spa baths since the warm water increases bacteria and uses up chlorine faster.
In fact, a 2005 article in “Water Conditioning and Purification” estimated that:
- Up to 85% of the chlorine used in a spa bath (without any other water sanitation system) is consumed in oxidation processes
- Only 2.5% is used for disinfection
- 2.5% maintains residual levels in the water
- 10% is destroyed by the hot water in the spa bath
Heard enough? No need to jump out the jacuzzi straight away. Ozone treatment can do the trick in combatting the nasty bacteria and microorganisms that lurk in the warm water.
Although many people use chlorine to maintain their spa baths, some water illnesses have proven to be resilient to the chemical. According to the USA’s National Swimming Pool Foundation’s Pool & Spa Operator Handbook, it takes 20 ppm of chlorine 12.75 hours to inactivate a bacteria called cryptosporidium. Ozone, on the other hand, is able to destroy cryptosporidium at a rate of 99.9%.
