The use of ozone in laundry cycles achieves the disinfection and wash quality of hot water washing, while bringing substantial savings in energy, water and chemical consumption, whilst simultaneously extending fabric life.


During 2004/5 Umoyamanzi conducted an extensive trial in Cape Town at the Tygerberg Hospital Laundry under the supervision of Professor S Mehtar (Head of Unit for Infection Control, Tygerberg Academic Hospital, Faculty of Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University) with the purpose of establishing the effect of using ozone in the laundry cycle. The trial was conducted on both standard and continuous batch (tunnel) washing machines. Our equipment has now been installed at the laundry since March 2008.     Below is the graph of the disinfection results achieved. It was proven that the use of ozone in the chemical washing process destroys bacteria more efficiently than in a traditional hot water wash process.



Energy Savings

65% REDUCTION in energy consumption to heat water.

Conventional washing methods require that 70% of wash water be heated to temperatures in ranges of 60°C to 82°C for proper stain removal when used in conjunction with conventional chemicals. They also require water temperature to attain 80°C to ensure bacteria disinfection. With the ozone washing system, the heating of water is ONLY required for heavily soiled wash loads, and then only to 32°C to 40°C. Ozone achieves the bacteria disinfection that heat normally does.


Chemical Savings

15% REDUCTION in chemical costs
Ozone substantially reduces the amount of wash chemicals required to achieve the same or better results than conventional processing. The oxidizing power of ozone dissolved in the wash water attacks oxidizable soils and chemically transforms insoluble soil into soluble substances.

  • Water and sewage savings

    25% REDUCTION in water usage
    Significant water savings are achieved due to fewer rinses being required as a result of reduced chemical input and, depending on the method of heating water, lower steam use.

    Improved sewage quality
    The oxidizing power of ozone in the wash wheel breaks down soils, bacteria and other micro organisms, which constitute the biological oxygen demand, before they reach the drain area. Also, by decreasing the chemicals rinsed down the drain, the chemical oxygen demand levels are greatly improved. Because ozone is an effective wastewater treatment chemical, it is anticipated that laundries will save money by reducing the surcharges from city sewer companies.

  • Fabric life extension

    90% REDUCTION in fabric wear and tear
    Strength tests undertaken resulted in a90% reduction in the wear and tear / strength loss on the linen with the ozone washes (i.e. linen life is significantly extended).

  • Other significant benefits

    • Increased productivity
    The ozone laundry solution can, almost without exception, reduce the wash formula time of any laundry facility. In most cases 25 – 30% of wash time is spent rinsing or filling and draining the washer while different chemistry is being applied to the linen.

    White and colour fabrics can be mixed during laundering.
